Yoga Nidra Helps Menstrual Irregularity Psychological Issues

Yoga Nidra  as a complimentary therapy to medication helps the psychological problems associated with menstrual irregularities better than medication alone, according to a study from Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University published in a 2011 issue of the International Yoga Journal.

 

Yoga Nidra is a guided, deep relaxation technique developed by Swami Satyananda Saraswati and also the author of Asana, Pranayama, Mudra, Bandha. The stated objective of Yoga Nidra is to “balance psychic and vital energies within the psychic channels.” During a Yoga Nidra class, students lay down with their eyes closed and listen to the words of a teacher.

 

The Women in the Yoga Nidra Study

The participants in this Yoga Nidra study were 150 female medical students diagnosed with menstrual irregularities. The researchers split the women into two groups. Both groups took medication, including Levonorgestrol, Norethistrone and Medroxy progesterone. The treatment group attended Yoga Nidra classes in addition to the  prescribed medication and control group did not.

 

Guided Yoga Nidra Session

The treatment group completed a 35-minute guided Yoga Nidra session, five days per week for six months. There are several core components of the class, including laying in corpse pose – shavasana, defining and repeating a personal positive resolve statement to direct the intention of the practice and counting breaths. The teacher also guides you through relaxing every part of your body and sometimes image visualization, such as looking at the ocean or walking through a lush forest. Results of the Yoga Nidra Study

The results show significant positive changes in psychological outcome measures for the Yoga Nidra group. In comparison to the control group, the Nidra Yoga group felt significantly less anxiety and depression. Additionally, the Yoga Nidra group reported significant increases in positive well-being, general health and energy.

 

How does Yoga Nidra help?

The researchers believe practicing Yoga Nidra reduces elevated cortisol levels associated with depression, and calmed the hypothalamus to reduce anxiety.
